Дівчата, які втекли від Голокосту. Як через 80 років розгадали таємницю культового фото
Фото трьох єврейських дівчат, які тікають з нацистської Німеччини, стало культовим - воно з'являлося в музеях, на виставках і в публікаціях. Його зробили на станції Ліверпуль-стріт у Лондоні, але понад 80 років ніхто не знав, ким були дівчата на знімку - аж дотепер.
Інге не пам'ятає, як був зроблений знімок, і протягом десятиліть навіть не знала про його існування.
П'ятирічна дівчинка втекла з Бреслау у Німеччині - тепер це польський Вроцлав - разом зі своєю 10-річною сестрою Рут.
Їхня мати і молодша сестра залишилися - і їх убили в Аушвіці.

Лише коли вона вже була пенсіонеркою, Інге усвідомила, що її та Рут, яка померла у 2015 році, назавжди увічнили як ікону Голокосту та Kindertransport - масової евакуації єврейських дітей із нацистської Німеччини у 1939 році.
Вона натрапила на це зображення в книзі історика Мартіна Гілберта "Ніколи знову".
"Це був великий сюрприз", - розповідає Інге, чиє дівоче прізвище було Адамец.
"Він щойно написав книгу "Три маленькі дівчинки", тож я написала йому і сказала, що ми ще живі. Люди кажуть, що я схожа на Ширлі Темпл", - каже вона.
"Я не знаю, хто ця третя дівчинка з лялькою. Я ніколи не знала, хто вона", - додає Рут.
Дівчинкою з лялькою виявилася 10-річна Ханна Кон, яка прибула тим же потягом зі своїм братом-близнюком Гансом, якого пізніше назвали Джеральдом, із Галле в Німеччині.
Штанину Ганса можна розгледіти на оригінальній скляній пластині фотографії.
Так само, як Інге та Рут, Ханна не пам'ятала, як була зроблена фотографія, хоча пам'ятала подорож і ляльку.
Вона померла в 2018 році, але розповіла про свій досвід в інтерв'ю Лондонському університету.
"Я пам'ятаю, як проїздила через Голландію, і добрі жінки давали нам булочки та лимонад", - згадувала вона.
"Ми приїхали на станцію "Ліверпуль-стріт" на потязі з Гарвіча, і сидіння там були оббиті, це були не дерев'яні сидіння, і я дуже хвилювався, що ми помилково опинилися в першому класі", - розповідала Ханна.
"Я також хвилювався, що ми їдемо на Ліверпуль-стріт, оскільки думала, що ми їдемо в Лондон, а Ліверпуль десь в іншому місці", - додала вона.
"Однак ми потрапили у цей великий зал. Я стискала ляльку, яку назвала Евелін".
Ханна вперше дізналася про фотографію, коли її брат побачив її на виставці в бібліотеці Камдена в Лондоні, присвяченій 50-річчю Kindertransport.
Її дочки-близнючки Деббі та Гелен Сінгер розповіли, що їй завжди було дуже цікаво, хто були двоє інших дівчат.
"Коли ми побачили фотографію, на якій вона сидить зі своєю косою та лялькою, вона сказала: "Цікаво, хто ті дві інші дівчинки?", - сказала Деббі.
І лише згодом, через понад 80 років після того, як була зроблена фотографія, її дочки дізналися правду, натрапивши на аудіосеріал BBC.
Ця серія під назвою "Дівчата: Порятунок від Голокосту" розповідала про забуту історію північно-східного гуртожитку, де Інге і Рут провели частину війни.
"Це був День пам'яті жертв Голокосту, і подруга надіслала мені посилання на новину на вебсайті BBC, - сказала Гелен і додала: "Я ще подумала: "Чому вона мені це прислала?", прокрутила сторінку вниз і побачила фото з мамою та іменами двох інших дівчат, Рут та Інге.
"Ми були дуже схвильовані. Я написала Деббі: "Ми знайшли дівчат".
У квітні Інге нарешті зустрілася з доньками Ханни в Імперському військовому музеї в Лондоні, де фотографію виставляли понад 20 років, щоб дізнатися більше про їхню родину та про те, що сталося після того, як зробили ту фотографію.
"Інге - особлива людина в нашому житті, - сказала Деббі. - Я думаю, що мама справді пишалася б нами".
"Вона завжди говорила про цих двох маленьких дівчаток, і той факт, що ми їх знайшли, був би для неї дуже важливим", - додала вона.
Але хто ж був фотографом?
Із записів, які зберігаються в архіві Getty Images Hulton, ми знаємо, що прізвище його було Стівенсон і він працював на Topical Press Agency, де було понад 1000 фотографів, які постачали фотографії для величезної газетної індустрії.
Журнал, де реєстрували роботи фотографа, за 5 липня 1939 року зберігся. Там позначено: "Троє маленьких дітей чекають на вокзалі Ліверпуль-стріт", з ім'ям фотографа Стівенсона на полях.
Ми не можемо знати напевно, але можливо, що ним був шотландець на ім'я Джон Ф. Стівенсон, який отримав популярність завдяки співавторству пісні Dear Old Glasgow Toon.
У 1930-х роках в агенції The Topical Press Agency була зареєстрована його адреса в Глазго.
Завдяки допомозі Шотландського державного архіву за адресами в свідоцтвах про народження та смерть ми відстежили його родину.
Його онук-журналіст Гордон Стівенсон був зачарований кар'єрою свого діда як позаштатного фотокореспондента наприкінці 30-х.
"Ми знали, що він фотографував усе своє життя, і ми маємо багато його фотографій, - сказав Гордон. - Ми знали, що це була величезна частина його життя".
"Але це завжди стосувалося пізнішого періоду, тому відкриття такої еклектичної кар'єри наприкінці 30-х було повним шоком, але неймовірним, - додав він. - Ми нічого не знали про його фотокар'єру на південь від кордону".
Фотографія з'явилася в національній газеті The News Chronicle наступного дня після того, як була зроблена, але потім її використовувалася лише зрідка - і лише з початком епохи цифрових технологій вона почала дедалі частіше з'являлася в газетах і на виставках.
Під час візиту Деббі та Гелен Сінгер архів Getty оновив підпис до фотографії, у якому тепер містяться імена всіх трьох дівчат.
"У мене сльози на очах, тому що ім'я нашої матері та те, звідки вона родом, тепер міститься в описі цієї фотографії разом з Інге та Рут, і вони не просто безіменні діти", - сказала Деббі.
"Це були не просто "три маленькі дівчинки", це були люди, чиї імена та життя були важливими", - погодилася Гелен.
"Вони заслуговували на те, щоб їх назвали, і ми думаємо, що наша мати була б цьому рада", - додала вона.
Інге, якій зараз 89 років і яка живе Лондоні, чекала понад 80 років, щоб дізнатися ім'я доброї дівчини, яка поділилася з нею своєю лялькою.
"Ця фотографія пройшла довгий шлях, - сказала вона. - Здається, вона просто приваблює людей".
