Британський уряд визнав, що Руанда все ще має “проблеми з дотриманням прав людини”, попри заяви прем’єр-міністра Ріші Сунака про те, що це безпечна країна.

Оцінка міститься в урядовій “політичній заяві”, надісланій міністром внутрішніх справ Джеймсом Клеверлі членам парламенту та лордам, намагаючись отримати підтримку для законопроекту щодо Руанди.
У документах, опублікованих у четвер, сказано, що “хоча Руанда зараз є відносно мирною країною з повагою до верховенства права, все ж існують проблеми з дотриманням прав людини, пов’язані з політичною опозицією нинішньому режиму, інакомисленням і свободою слова”.

У 2017 році руандійські виборці обрали Пола Кагаме на третій семирічний термін президентства. Міжнародні спостерігачі на виборах повідомили про численні недоліки, включно з порушеннями під час підрахунку голосів.
У доповіді уряду США про права людини за 2022 рік зазначено, що уряд Руанди “перешкоджав створенню політичних партій, обмежував діяльність політичних партій і затримував або відмовляв у реєстрації місцевим і міжнародним неурядовим організаціям, які прагнули займатися правами людини, свободою ЗМІ чи політичною пропагандою”.Сунак готується до обговорення свого плану депортації мігрантів до Руанди у Палаті громад наступного вівторка та середи.
Колишній міністр юстиції сер Роберт Бакленд вніс низку поправок до законопроєкту про безпеку Руанди, включно з поправками, які вилучають положення, які оголошують східноафриканську країну безпечною.
Лейбористи планують внести поправки, щоб змусити уряд надати повний звіт про витрати, які становитиме законопроєкт, зокрема поточну вартість перевезення людей та деталі фінансового меморандуму, підписаного Великою Британією та Руандою.
