Дитинство без електрики: історія засновника Flickr
Стюарт Баттерфілд - один з лідерів світу технологій, засновник компаній Flickr та Slack. В інтерв'ю щотижневій програмі ВВС The Boss він розказав про свій шлях у великий бізнес.
В нього було зовсім не таке дитинство, яке ви могли б асоціювати з одним з важковаговиків Кремнієвої долини.
Стюарт Баттерфілд провів перші п'ять років свого життя в комуні у віддаленій частині Канади. Його батько втік з США, аби уникнути військової служби під час В'єтнамської війни.

Разом з батьками пан Баттерфілд жив у невеликій дерев'яній хатинці у канадській провінції Британська Колумбія, де протягом трьох років не було ані води, ані електрики.
"Мої батьки були хіпі, - розповідає Стюарт Баттерфілд, якого батько й мати спочатку назвали Дхармою. - Вони хотіли жити за рахунок землеробства, але виявилося, що це потребувало великих зусиль, тому ми повернулися в місто".
Після того, як родина переїхала до столиці Британської Колумбії - Вікторії, пан Батерфілд побачив свій перший комп'ютер, коли йому було сім років, і самостійно навчився програмуванню з того самого віку.
Повернемося трохи у сьогоднішній день, коли особистий статок 46-річного Стюарта Баттерфілд, який заснував веб-сайт для обміну фотографіями Flickr та службу Slack, складає 650 млн доларів.
Можливо, саме через незвичайне дитинство він говорить, що намагається жити економно.
"Насправді я відчуваю себе винуватим, витрачаючи забагато грошей, - говорить він. - Як канадцю цей світ здається мені дивним та чужим".
Пан Баттерфілд багато в чому пояснює свій успіх вдачею.
Він говорить, що в 7-річному віці його зачарувала перша хвиля персональних комп'ютерів.
"Мені було приблизно сім років у 1980 році, і це, був, мабуть, Apple II або IIE, який купили мої батьки. Я навчався програмувати самостійно, використовуючи журнали про комп'ютери", - згадує засновник Flickr.
Пан Баттерфілд, який змінив своє ім'я на Стюарт у 12-річному віці, навчався робити прості комп'ютерні ігри.
Проте він втратив інтерес до комп'ютерів під час навчання у вищій школі та відправився вивчати філософію в Університеті Вікторії. Пізніше він стане магістром філософії в Кембриджському університеті у Великій Британії.
У 1997 році він вже збирався стати професором філософії, коли інтернет "реально почав набувати шаленої популярності".
"Люди, які вміли робити сайти, попрямували до Сан-Франциско, і в мене було багато друзів, які робили вдвічі більше, або втричі більше, ніж професори. Це було захопливо", - згадує пан Баттерфілд.
Таким чином, він покинув академічне життя і згадав любов до комп'ютерів.
Кілька років він працював веб-дизайнером, а в 2002 році запустив разом з тодішньою дружиною, співзасновником Flickr Катериною Фейк онлайн-гру.
Гра, яка називалася Game Neverending, не здобула популярності, і пара залишилася без грошей. Під час гарячкових пошуків виходу зі складного становища, в Стюарта та Катерини народилася ідея створити протягом трьох місяців сервіс обміну фотографіями Flickr.
"З'явилися перші телефони з камерою, все більше й більше домашніх господарств долучалися до мережі", - згадує він.
Flickr заснували у 2004 році. Він став одним з перших сайтів, який дозволяв завантажувати, надсилати, коментувати фотографії та позначати на них інших людей.
Ще через рік засновники продали компанію інтернет-гіганту Yahoo за 25 млн доларів. Пізніше пан Баттерфілд називав це "неправильним рішенням", бо вважав, що треба було почекати, аби отримати кращі умови угоди.
Через деякий час він зайнявся більшим проектом - Slack.
На дворі був 2009 рік. Пан Баттерфілд з кількома партнерами вирішив створити іншу онлайн-гру, і знову нічого не вийшло. Проте, це посприяло мозковому штурму.
"Коли ми працювали над грою, ми створили систему внутрішньої комунікації, яку ми дійсно любили, - згадує бізнесмен. - Ми не подумали одразу про це, це було досить довго на задньому плані, але через кілька років ми подумали, що можливо, й інші люди зацікавляться нею".
Ця система стала основою Slack, яка на сьогодні може похвалитися вісьмома мільйонами щоденних користувачів. З них три мільйони платять за більш просунуті функції. Також в сервіса є понад 70 тисяч корпоративних клієнтів.
Slack дозволяє співробітникам спілкуватися та співпрацювати один з одним у групах на роботі. Сервіс швидко зростає. IBM, Samsung, 21st Century Fox та Marks & Spencer - це лише кілька великих компаній, які користуються ним. Після кількох раундів розміщення цінних паперів Slack зараз оцінюється в 5,1 млрд доларів.
Кріс Грін, аналітик з технологій консалтингової компанії Bright Bee, вважає, що це рідкісний випадок, коли підприємець створює щось успішне на руїнах невдалого проекту.
"Але якщо ви подивитеся на кар'єру Стюарта, це не просто удача, він завжди залишається інноватором в тіні та шукає способи навести порядок у хаосі. Ось що Flickr та Slack обидва зробили, кожен по-своєму", - каже пан Грін.
Водночас Slack має конкурентів. Microsoft пропонує безкоштовну послугу зі своїм пакетом Office 365, а стартап Zoom може похвалитися більш масштабною пропозицією приблизно за тією ж ціною.
"Існує величезна конкуренція з боку деяких великих компаній, які добре фінансуються, тому Slack потрібно продовжувати розвиватися", - вважає пан Грін.
Гіганти технологічного сектору опинилися на лінії вогню через те, що не платять достатньо податків. Пан Баттерфілд говорить, що Slack буде радий платити більше податків.
"Я також хотів би побачити більш рівноправну податкову політику. У мене немає проблем з виплатою податків. Я не думаю, що компанії оподатковуються достатньо, або критично, у правильному напрямку".
Щодо майбутнього, пан Баттерфілд каже, що, на відміну від Flickr, він не має наміру залишати Slack.
"Так багато речей мали опинитися на своєму місці - дивовижна вдача мала місце - і я не такий розумний, що можу просто зробити це знову", - говорить він.
